Using the Grid Method in Drawing for Proportions

Drawing is one of the most unutterably painful activities, especially if it is taking the right proportions. One way that artists have managed to achieve this over the years is by using the grid method. This method also assists you immensely in drawing in maintaining proportions.

What is the Grid Method?
With the grid method, you take your reference image and divide it into an equal number of squares, then transfer it onto your drawing surface in the same pattern. It helps artists to focus on each square at a time and so makes complex images more straightforward to execute because observable sections can be taken, thus easy to get accurate shapes and proportions. It is very helpful for beginners who do not have particularly trained observation skills.

How to Use the Grid Method
Then, make a clean source image, either a photograph or another picture. It should have clear forms and lines so that you can compose a grid over it.

Lay a grid of equal squares (usually 1 inch by 1 inch or 2 cm by 2 cm) over the reference image. This can be manually accomplished using a ruler and pencil to lightly draw lines on the picture, but most photo editing programs also provide the option to digitally apply grids.

Create a Corresponding Grid on Your Drawing Surface: Transfer the grid from your reference image onto your drawing paper or canvas. The squares must be exactly the same size as the ones on the reference. This is where the keeping of proportions becomes important.

Draw Square by Square: Work from one square at a time. Focus only on the contents of that square, noting how the shapes and lines fill the squares around it. You can only focus on detail without the concern for the entirety of the image.

Refine Your Drawing: Now you've made your initial sketch using the grid, stand back from your paper and review your work. You can now remove the lines of the grid and amplify the detail, add shadow and highlights, and texture to breathe life into your drawing.

Advantages of the Grid System
Greater Precision: The grid system allows you to have right proportions and correct dimensions, especially for intricate subjects such as portraits or landscapes.

Enhanced Observational Skills: This method ensures you look carefully, and all your overall drawing and observational skills are enhanced over time.

Less Frustration in Recreating-Whereas the break down of a complex image in small sections sometimes is challenging and brings anxiety, it also shows you that it is not such a scary picture, and it becomes a very pleasant drawing.
It is really rewarding when you incorporate the grid method in your practice of drawing.

This will be able to represent accurately what you are drawing accurately. The technique will add much value as a great tool for improvement in the ability of drawing into the maximum skill if you are an upcoming artist or already an expert one. Therefore, you will enjoy having a sharp eye for proportions and details as long as you continuously use this method. So, take your pencil, make a grid, and start drawing!
